On Thursday, Antiochian Metropolitan Ephrem of Tripoli, Al-Koura, and Dependencies commemorated Fathers Dumitru Stăniloae and Andrei Scrima at Cernica Monastery.

The memorial service was attended by His Grace Bishop Qais Sadiq, Patriarchal Auxiliary Bishop of the Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East, who cares for the Arab community in Bucharest, Rev. Professor Porphyrios Georgi from the Theological Institute of the University of Balamand, and Protosyncellys Vasile Pârjol, Abbot of Cernica Monastery.

“We have come to this holy place to offer our prayers for the repose of the souls of Father Professor Dumitru Stăniloae and Father Andrei Scrima,” declared the Metropolitan.

His Eminence Metropolitan Ephrem recalled meeting Father Andrei Scrima at St. George Monastery in Deir el Harf, the mountains of Lebanon. “Fr. Andrei Scrima was the spiritual father of the monastic community.”

“I remember very well when he was there. I was a student and I recall vividly attending meetings where he explained the Gospel of John. Glory to God for giving us this opportunity to lift our prayers for the repose of the souls of Fr. Dumitru Stăniloae and Fr. Andrei Scrima.”

Metropolitan Ephrem mentioned that although he did not personally know Father Dumitru Stăniloae, he has profound respect for him.

Father Porphyrios Georgi testified, “We came to know Father Stăniloae through our Antiochian students who studied in Bucharest, and we had the chance to read his works translated into various languages. Without a doubt, all who knew Fr. Professor Dumitru Stăniloae agree that his presence was a living testimony of Orthodox faith and his life was a vivid witness of faith.”

“As a professor at the Theological Institute of the University of Balamand, we are delighted that a married priest and dogmatist will be declared and canonized as a saint. This is a great joy for us,” said Fr. Porphyrios.

After the memorial service, Metropolitan Ephrem visited the churches of Cernica Monastery and the museum of the monastic settlement.

Metropolitan Ephrem of Tripoli, Al-Koura, and Dependencies also participated in the patronal feast of Sângeap Basaraba Monastery in Iași County last week.
