The Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II, this week officiated at his 62nd mass baptism of infants, with the sacrament held at Tbilisi’s Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.

According to an announcement by the Georgian Patriarchate, His Holiness and Beatitude personally served as the Godparent of 521 infants, with his God-children now numbering more than 40,000 in the Caucasus country.

The Primate of the Georgian Orthodox Church performed his first mass baptism of infants in January 2008, an initiative aimed to reverse the low birth rate in the country.

The Georgian Patriarch has pledged to personally baptize and act as the Godfather of each third child born to a Georgian Orthodox couple married in a religious ceremony.
