Moscow Patriarchate backs proposal to include God in under-revision Russian constitution

In Russia, public discussion has rekindled over the prospect of referring to God in the under-revision constitution, something that has been proposed by the Russian Orthodox Church. No reference to God or a higher power is currently cited in Russia’s constitution. The proposal will be discussed by members of a work group assigned the subject of constitutional revision, according to Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the President of Russia.

In a related statement, the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, His Holiness Kirill, stressed that “… let us pray and labor so that our constitution refers to God, because the majority of Russian citizens believe in God; and I am not only talking about Orthodox Christians.”

The Russian Patriarch’s position is shared by the Primates of other Churches in the country. Additionally, the Moscow Patriarchate has called for a definition of marriage, as a union between a man and a woman, to also be included in the constitution.

During debate for Greece’s constitutional revision prior to 2019, one proposal entertained by the then leftist SYRIZA government was to include reference to religious neutrality in the Greek constitution, as well as to abolish articles listing Orthodoxy as the prevalent religion in the predominately Greek Orthodox nation.

Those proposals fell by the wayside.

The invocation “…In the name of the Holy and Consubstantial and Indivisible Trinity” continues to precede the individual articles in the constitution. Moreover, Article III, which includes the phrase “…The prevailing religion in Greece is that of the Eastern Orthodox Church of Christ,” also remained intact.
