European Commission to probe charges of abandonement, destruction of chapel’s mosaics in Turkish-occupied Cyprus

A relevant European Commission service this week acknowledged a problem as described in a written intervention by Cypriot Euro-Deputy Costas Mavrides, who warned of a deliberate abandonment and destruction of mosaics at the chapel of St. Eulalios, in the Turkish-occupied Kyrenia district in northern Cyprus.

The Commission replied that its cultural heritage committee has already begun an investigation into the fate of the mosaics, in order to begin preservation work as soon as possible.

The chapel is in the portion of the island republic illegally occupied by the Turkish military.
