Message of solidarity to Greece by Patriarch of Alexandria & All Africa

The Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, His Divine Beatitude Theodoros II, referred to the unprecedented situation on the Greek-Turkish border, speaking during a sermon on Sunday, March 8, on the occasion of the commemoration of Sunday of Orthodoxy.

His Divine Beatitude expressed his solidarity and best wishes to Greece and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as the country faces what Athens calls an “asymmetrical” threat from neighboring Turkey, as well as a “weaponization” of migrants, something previously threatened by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In a statement, the Patriarch of Alexandria emphasized that “… Greece has always been a mother of mercy, poverty and love. It opens its heart, but at the same time it guards its borders”.

Still in Egypt, members of the ethnic Greek community in Cairo commemorated the Sunday of Orthodoxy at the Sts. Constantine and Helen Orthodoxy cathedral in the Egyptian capital.
