The order of Holy Bishop Nicholas to Grandmaster Karpov
The Russian chess grandmaster, the multiple champion of the world and one of the greatest chess players of all times, received the Order of the Holy Bishop Nicholas (Velimirovic), the highest decoration of the Diocese of Valjevo, and joined it to the series of awards in his rich career and life.
The proved friend of the Serbian people, who has been an honorary citizen of Valjevo for a whole decade, received the order from His Grace Bishop Milutin of Valjevo in the Diocesan Palace on 22. December 2018.
The solemn event was attended by the President of the Chess club “Saint Nicholas”, cardio surgeon Dr. Bosko Djukanovic, eminent doctor and humanist, who has been giving support for many years to the development of the chess games in Valjevo and the club, which celebrates its 70th anniversary, whereas the “black and white squares” game in the town has much longer tradition – 138 years.
The meeting with Bishop of Valjevo with Mr. Karpov was a sign of brotherly love that binds two peoples. Since the Chess Club of Valjevo is going to participate in European championships next year, Mr. Karpov accepted to be the team selector, which is unusual honour.
In honour of the jubilee of the Chess club “Saint Nicholas”, a solemn academy in the Grammar School of Valjevo took place.
