Missionaries sound ‘alarm bells’ over Covid-19, other diseases plaguing Africa

In sub-Saharan Africa the Covid-19 pandemic has merely added yet another possible calamity for millions of people in under-developed parts of the continent, which is already battered by disease, hunger and a lack of clean drinking water.
International humanitarian aid organizations are already warning of the possibility of a famine of “Biblical” proportions.

It’s amid this latest crisis that Orthodoxy is again at the forefront of providing much needed humanitarian aid to those in need.

In a message posted on social media by the Archimandrite Porfyrios, the latter writes that “…concern and fear has spread to many of our fellow people. This, however, is the daily struggle faced by missionaries who live in a continent such as Africa, which is plagued by deadly diseases, such as Ebola, malaria, AIDS, syphilis and typhus…with a result being thousands of deaths”.
