Feast day of Panteleimon the Great Martyr and Healer
The Church today venerates the memory of Panteleimon the Great Martyr and Healer.
This Saint, who had Nicomedia in northwest Asia Minor as his homeland, was the son of a pagan, but his mother was a Christian from her ancestors.
Panteleimon, whose name means means “all-merciful” in Greek, was arrested for practising medicine practiced in a philanthropic manner, healing every illness more by the grace of Christ than by medicines.
He was beheaded in the year 305, during the reign of Maximian.
St. Panteleimon is one of the Holy Unmercenaries, and is held in special honor among them, even as Saint George is among the martyrs.
