The Church today venerates the memory of Euphrosyne of Alexandria.

The righteous Mother Euphrosyne lived during the reign of St. Theodosius the Younger in the 5th century.

Forsaking her father’s wealth, she renamed herself Smaragdus, while pretending to be a eunuch of the imperial palace. She dressed herself as a man and entered a monastery, where her identity remained unknown until her repose 38 years later.
