Restoration of chapels sacked, vandalized around Moria migrant camp begins

Local residents on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos, which has borne the brunt of a migrant crisis in the region since 2015, are beginning the slow process of rebuilding and restoring the chapels near the infamous Moria shelter, which was burned to the ground last month.

Certain foreign NGOs, in fact, had set up illegal camp grounds outside chapels and cemeteries.

The restoration of the Orthodox places of worship is partially funded by financial assistance sent to the Metropolis of Lesvos and volunteer local residents by the government of Hungary.

Six Afghan nationals, all young asylum seekers that illegally landed in Greece after first setting off from neighboring Turkey, were arrested by Greek authorities last month on arson charges.

The first chapels where work crews arrived were those of the Archangels, St. George and St. John, all in the vicinity of the Moria camp.
