Ecumenical Patriarchate’s Holy Synod briefed on emergency work to save Prinkipo Orphanage

Members of the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople were briefed last week over emergency preservation initiatives to save and fully restore the Prinkipo Greek Orthodox Orphanage. Members of the Holy and Sacred Synod convened at the Monastery of the Life-Giving Font of the Theotokos, the Virgin Mary, in this Balikli district.

The orphanage, located on the same-name Marmara Sea island, was ordered shut by Turkish authorities in 1964, who cited safety reasons. While closed, the Turkish state confiscated the property in 1997, until the Ecumenical Patriarchate won it back through a landmark decision by the European Court of Human Rights in 2010.
