The Greek Orthodox priest based in the French city of Lyon has woken from a coma after Monday’s successful surgery.

Although fake news spread on Sunday that Father Nikolaos Kakavelakis, who was shot twice in the stomach on Saturday, had died, Greek City Times confirmed with a family contact that the priest was “doing well” after Monday’s surgery.

Now Father George Vasilakis of the Greek Orthodox French Diocese confirmed today that Father Kakavelakis has woken from his coma.

Although he managed to speak and move, he “suffers a lot,” according to the representative of the French Diocese.

Father Kakavelakis was about to return to Greece after his stint presiding over the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation in Lyon.

The shooter is still not known.

Fake news published in French media alleged that the suspect was a Far Right political candidate and former Greek Orthodox monk.

However, the suspect was released from custody. French prosecutors said the initial suspect was a homeless man and “the doctor who examined him decided that he should be taken to a psychiatric clinic.”
