Archbishop Ieronymos, Greek PM discuss status of Christmas Church-going amid pandemic restrictions; no decisions announced

The Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, His Beatitude Ieronymos, spoke by phone on Tuesday evening with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with the object of discussions focusing directly on how upcoming Christmas services will be celebrated by the Church of Greece.

Currently, and up until Dec. 14, services in all places of worship in the east Mediterranean country are conducted without the presence of worshippers, part of restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

A subsequent press release by Mitsotakis’ office merely noted that the course of the pandemic in Greece was discussed, along with how Church-going will be conducted amid the “…very extraordinary current conditions.”

Nevertheless, no decisions were announced for the period after Dec. 14, with the statement adding that they will be unveiled in the coming days.
