International Migrants Day: Half of world’s Greeks legally reside outside Greece proper

Today, December 18, has been designated as International Migrants Day by the United Nations.

It’s worth reminding that roughly one-half of Greeks worldwide reside outside Greece proper, while tens of thousands of people, mostly younger and skilled professionals, emigrated from the Greece over the past decade, amid the punishing economic and debt crisis that battered the country.

As it had done for a millennium and a half, the Orthodox Church continues to play a significant role for Hellenism worldwide, with Greek Orthodox parishes now found in practically every corner of the world, beacons of Hellenism and Orthodoxy.
