Strict coronavirus-related measures in place around Greece for New Year’s Day church services

Greek police plan a crackdown on violators of current coronavirus measures on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. More than 10,000 police officers will be deployed throughout the country in order to ensure compliance with the measures for preventing the spread of the COVID 19 virus. The restrictions will be similar to those imposed during Christmas, but more intensive.

Police authorities remain in contact with Metropolitans and parish priests around Greece in order to ensure that public assembly restrictions are followed and maintained during Friday’s New Year’s Day services. Currently, one person is allowed inside places of worship for every 15 square meters of floor space. At least two meters must separate worshippers, while the maximum number of faithful allowed within metropolitan cathedrals is 50. The wearing of face masks is also mandatory, as is the sending of a specific code via SMS for the purpose of Church-going.
