Greek govt eases restrictions on Church-going, holding of sacraments

A new joint ministerial decision regarding Covid-19 lockdown restrictions in Greece went into effect on Monday and will continue until Jan. 25, with the Greek government proceeding with a relaxation of measures that affect the retail sector, and in regions where the concentration of the coronavirus is at acceptable levels.

In a welcome development for the Church and the faithful, restrictions against the presence of worshipers during the Divine Liturgy have been eased, while the sacraments of marriage and baptism will again be allowed, but with all public health precautions in place – such as a maximum number of guests, the mandatory wearing of face masks and public distancing between people inside a place of worship.

Conversely, outdoor litanies and religious processions are still banned.
