New law abolishes previous amendment allowing for confiscation of ecclesiastical archives

A law affecting ecclesiastical archives, the archives of Monasteries of Mount Athos and other religious communities was finally published today in the government gazette.

The new law essentially amends and replaces a 2019 law that was sharply opposed by the Church of Greece.

The previous legislation provided the relevant minister of education and religious affairs to right to confiscate ecclesiastical archives and transfer them to the General State Archives. This provision is now absent from the new legislation.

Still in Athens, members of the permanent Holy Synod of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece concluded their two-day meetings on Thursday, with the session conducted via teleconference.
