MONTENEGRO: METROPOLITAN AMFILOHIJE COMMEMORATED ON FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF HIS REPOSE

His Eminence Metropolitan Amfilohije of Montenegro reposed in the Lord on October 30 last year, having led the Montenegro Metropolis for 30 years,

In honor of its beloved departed hierarch, the Metropolis held several days of events in his honor last week to commemorate the first anniversary of his repose.

In Saturday, on the anniversary itself, Met. Amfilohije’s successor, His Eminence Metropolitan Joanikije, celebrated the Divine Liturgy together with several other hierarchs of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the Cathedral of Christ’s Resurrection in the capital city of Podgorica, where His Eminence lies in repose, the Metropolis reports.

Preaching after the Gospel, His Grace Bishop Teodosije of Raška and Prizren emphasized how Met. Amfilohije taught his people to love Christ above all.

“We thank God today that we had such a teacher, a shepherd, a father, and we follow his path, we continue his work, because it is God’s path, which leads to resurrection and eternal life,” Bp. Teodosije said. “And kissing his grave, we kiss Christ Himself, with Whom he lived.”

Following the Liturgy, a panikhida for Met. Amfilohije was served.

Addressing those gathered for the service, Met. Joanikije noted that “Since he moved from this world to a new life, somehow we admire him even more and look at his work from a new unusual perspective. But what is still clear is that he carried the Lord Jesus Christ and His grace and His Spirit in his heart, and was overshadowed by the wisdom of God and the power of the word of God worked through his word.”

“His face shone here on earth, but we are convinced that he will shine in eternity,” Met. Joanikije added.

The hierarchs, clergy, and people then moved to Met. Amfilohije’s grave, where they again prayed for the repose of his soul.
