Aid request for Beirut – Holy Metropolis of NZ on behalf of H.E. Metropolitan Basilios of the Antiochian Orthodox Church of Australia and NZ

PLEASE IF YOU WANT TO HELP THE FAMILIES OF BEIRUT GIVE GENEROUSLY AND QUICKLY.
From His Eminence Metropolitan Basilios,
Many of you will be aware through the news that there was a devastating explosion in Beirut, Lebanon, on Tuesday, killing at least 157 people, with many others still missing or injured and damage to homes and infrastructure rendering countless people homeless and unemployed. On Thursday evening, His Eminence Metropolitan Basilios wrote to the clergy in Australia and here are the relevant parts of his message:
I pray that you are well and safe.
I would like to bring to your attention that the news of the tragedy in Lebanon is unfolding to be a catastrophe on a high scale. I am sure you are aware of the miserable situation that the victims are enduring.
Besides our fervent prayers to the Theotokos to lessen the burdens of those who are afflicted, we must extend a helping hand to assist them in regaining some of their livelihood. I am also aware of our own situation with COVID-19 and its impact on our Churches, however, we must not turn a blind eye, rather we should remember the widow’s mite and the comment of our Lord about giving.
The Archdiocese will be sending any funds collected directly to the Archdiocese of Beirut to assist in this tragedy.
I hope that you will take this message seriously by collecting some donations.
May God strengthen you in every good work that causes thanksgiving to His Holy Name.
