All Russian Orthodox Church parishes in Southeast Asia to pray for riddance of coronavirus

The Church needs to increase the prayers for riddance of coronavirus, for the people and the administrations of its countries due to the epidemic of coronavirus, Metropolitan Sergy, the patriarch’s exarch of Southeast Asia, said.

He gave his blessing for a special prayer service.

“Now that the offices of many establishments are temporarily closed and many Christian communities, in particular, in Singapore, have made a decision to suspend their activities and services indefinitely, Metropolitan Sergy gave his blessing not only to continue regular services, but also to conduct a special prayer service, involving kneeling prayers, for a speedy recovery of those who are ill and a cessation of the spread of the disease in all parishes every Sunday after the Divine Liturgy,” Patriarch Kirill’s press service said on Tuesday.

The metropolitan told the flock after a liturgy in the Assumption Cathedral in Singapore that people who live on the territory of its canonical responsibility have more than once been faced with deadly diseases that affected whole settlements and regions in more than 1,000 years in the history of the Russian Church.

“In such periods, there is a need for full mobilization of all resources and increased precautions. However, let’s remember that churches were especially full of people and the Church prayed harder to the Lord for assistance with a speedy cessation of epidemics when public places, schools and state establishments closed,” the patriarch’s exarch said.

After the service, he sang the first prayer song for a speedy recovery of the sick and a cessation of the spread of the coronavirus disease. Such prayer services will be conducted in all parishes of the patriarch’s exarchate in Southeast Asia starting from next Sunday.

The exarchate was established by a decision of the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church in December 2018. Its parishes are located on the territories of Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, North Korea, South Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and the Philippines.
