Turkish state-run news agency, Anadolu, this week posted a featured entitled” Turkish monastery welcomes over 123,000 tourists in 99 days”, referring to the ancient Panaghia Sumela monastery in the Pontus region of the southeast coast of the Black Sea, and near the historic city of Trabzon.
The monastery is identified as “Turkish” in the English-language article, whereas in the Turkish-language article it’s merely “Sumela Monastery”.
The article refers to the monastery as “…one of the most important faith tourism centers of Turkey.”
However, the words “Christian”, “Orthodox”, “Greek” or even “Pontus” are missing from the feature piece, along with any reference to the monastery’s storied history.
