Archbishop Anastasios on reviving Christian Orthodoxy in Albania – interview, footage today on Orthodoxia news agency (video)
A very interesting and insightful video has been posted today by the Orthodoxia news agency, focusing on Albania and the revival of Orthodox Christianity in what was once Europe’s most oppressed and isolated corners.
Journalist Maria Giachnaki and a camera crew from the Orthodoxia news agency traveled to Albania this month, to speak with the Archbishop of Tirana and All Albania, His Beatitude Anastasios, and to chronicle the revival of Orthodoxy in the southeast European country since the early 1990s. The assignment, in fact, came just after a devastating earthquake struck central coastal Albania, where the Church was on the forefront of providing aid and comfort to the quake-stricken.
When Anastasios first arrived in the country as a Patriarchal Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, and before being elected as Archbishop in 1992, he was faced with a bleak landscape and an impoverished society, materially and spiritually, where every form of religious observance and confession had been outlawed and persecuted severely for decades.
