On Friday, October 13, 2023, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America accompanied by Mr. Jim Logothetis, chairman of both Leadership 100 and the Greek Education Committee of the Archdiocesan Council visited several of the local Hellenic Day Schools in the Chicago area: Guardian Angel Day School of the Saint John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Des Plains, IL, Plato Academy in Des Plaines, IL , and the Hellenic America Academy in Deerfield, IL. The students and faculty of all the schools warmly welcomed them with presentations of poems, hymns and songs. The Archbishop visited classes and toured the impressive facilities of these institutions and congratulated their administrators and all who contribute to their godly function of teaching our rich faith and cultural heritage.

That evening Archbishop Elpidophoros together with Metropolitan Nathanael visited St. Nectarios in Palatine, IL which was hosting the HOPE Service Project (Humanitarian, Outreach and Philanthropic Engagement ) as a closing the Metropolis’s Clergy Laity Assembly. They were welcomed by the area clergy and the children of the parish’s Greek School. The Proistamenos of the parish, Fr. Chris Michalopoulos, in his welcome remarks noted that this is the first visit of an Archbishop to their parish and presented the Archbishop with an hierarchical engolpion of Saint Nectarios to mark this historic moment for their community.

The mission of HOPE is to partner with parishes in the Metropolis of Chicago and local networks to provide food security and stable housing to those in need. Participants of Project HOPE, Ascension of Our Lord Greek Orthodox Church of Lincolnshire Illinois, delegates of the 2023 Chicago Clergy Laity Assembly, and the Metropolis of Chicago Philoptochos members packaged 800 bags with 22,000 meals for the Palatine Food Pantry, JOURNEYS the Road Home, and Midwest Veterans of the Northern Suburbs.
