His Beatitude Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and all Greece has invited His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to visit Athens on May 23, 2019, to preside over the official opening of the St. Porphyrios Center for Gerontology and Welfare Support, in the presence of many dignitaries including Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos.
The invitation was presented by Bishop Symeon of Thespies from the Archdiocese of Athens, who traveled to Constantinople and met with the Ecumenical Patriarch at the Phanar today.
His All-Holiness accepted the invitation and wished Bishop Symeon and His Beatitude sincerest wishes for Easter.
Observers will be watching this gathering closely, especially in the context of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine, whose autocephaly the Church of Greece has yet to officially recognize. Will this meeting mark a change in positioning? Time will tell.
