Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, His Beatitude Ieronymos, on Wednesday will travel to the Evros border prefecture in the country’s extreme northeast, in order to offer his support to the region’s residents and to security and military personnel serving there, amid an unprecedented decision by neighboring Turkey’s government to allow “free passage” to any and all third country nationals towards EU territory.

The unprecedented decision, following successive threats to do so by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has caused the worst migrant crisis on Greece’s borders since 2015.

His Beatitude will arrive by plane in the city of Alexandroupolis and then travel overland to Didymoticho, where he will meet with Thrace region Metropolitans. He will also visit the Kastanies border post on the frontier with Turkey, the focal point for the worst ongoing irregular migrant crisis on the European continent.
