The visiting Archbishop of Australia, His Eminence Makarios, earlier this week visited the Patriarchal and Stavropegic Gouverneto Monastery, known as the Our Lady of the Angels Monastery, which is located on the Akrotiri peninsula, in western Crete.

His Eminence represented the Ecumenical Patriarchate on the occasion of the veneration of John the Hermit of Crete, on the feast day of Oct. 7. St. John lived in asceticism in a cave next to the Monastery, where he reposed in the Lord.

Thousands of worshippers flocked to an all-night celebratory vigil at the Monastery to venerate the wonder-working icon and relics of St. John the Hermit of Crete.

On his part, His Eminence Makarios expressed his joy and deep emotion as a participant in the Feast Day services, which also served as his first officiation of Divine Services on his native Crete since being enthroned as the Archbishop of Australia.
