BULGARIA ALLOCATES $2.1 MILLION FOR RESTORATION OF CHURCHES AND MONASTERIES
The Bulgaria state has again allocated significant funds for the restoration of churches and monasteries throughout the country.
At its meeting yesterday, the Council of Ministers resolved to give about $2,155,000 (about 3.5 million lev) for repairs and construction on 9 churches, reports Dobrotoliubie.
Funds were also allocated for repairs to one mosque. “In Bulgaria, people of different religions live in peace and understanding … for which I thank them,” said Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.
The sites to be renovated are the Monastery of St. Marina in the village of Karan Varbovka, the Churches of St. Dimitar, St. Minas, and the Dormition in Kyustendil, the Church of St. Petka in the village of Nevestino, the Church of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke near the village of Granitsa, and the Church of the Holy Archangel Michael in the village of Shuma.
Funds were also allocated to build the Church of the Dormition in Pernik.
PM Borisov also noted that the Council of Ministers also allocated about $2,460,000 (about 4 million lev) to finance theological schools last week.
The state also allocated about $1.5 million for churches and monasteries in December. Borisov earlier announced in June during a visit to Rila Monastery that the government would allocate funds to the Bachkovo and Troyan Monasteries. He also announced an allocation of $1 million to Rila Monastery at that time.
In 2017 and 2018, the Bulgarian government allocated nearly $300,000 for repairs to the Church of Sts. Onuphrius, Damascene, and All the Gabrovo Martyrs in Gabrovo. In 2014 and 2019, the government allocated funds for Zographou Monastery on Mt. Athos, and in May of 2019, the Sofia City Council allocated $114,000 to renovate three churches.
