Residents on a handful of islands in the eastern Aegean continue to face the ongoing and still unresolved migrant/refugee crisis in the area – which springs from the fact that tens of thousands of third country nationals and would-be asylum seekers have landed or have been smuggled onto the islands from the opposite Turkish coast – with the crisis first erupting in the spring of 2015.
In one particularly disturbing incident, residents near the infamous Moria migrant camp on the island of Lesvos charged that groups of irregular migrants, all from predominately Muslim countries, have repeatedly vandalized and defaced a small chapel in the area.

The Chapel of St. Catherine, or Ekaterini in Greek, now remains locked at all times, with local residents attempting to prevent another defilement of the Greek Orthodox house of worship.
