Christian leader in Pakistan: Parents of Christian children giving them Muslim names to avoid school abuse

The website Christiantoday.com this month reported that a Christian bishop in predominately Muslim Pakistan decried the need for parents of Christian children in the country to give their offspring Muslim first names, in order to avoid abuse in public schools.
According to Bishop Samson Shukardin “…Many minorities give their children Islamic names so they will not be singled out as Christians and become potential targets for discrimination in primary or secondary schools, or at the college level… In many cases, minority students do suffer abuse in public schools.”

The Christian cleric warned that even school textbooks in Pakistan portray minorities in a negative light.

He said …”Minorities are considered infidels and they are depicted negatively in textbooks, which promote prejudices against minorities.”
