Church commemorates placing of the Honorable Sash of the Most Holy Theotokos

The Church today commemorates the placing of the Honorable Sash, or Cincture, of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Ever-Virgin Mary.

The deposition that is celebrated today, by most accounts, took place during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Arcadius, when the precious Cincture of the Mother of God was brought from the province of Cappadocia to Constantinople, and placed in the Church of the Theotokos, in the Chalcopratia district.

The honorable sash is preserved today in a reliquary at the Holy and Great Monastery of Vatopedi, on Mount Athos.
