The Church today venerates the memory of St. Dionysius, who was born and raised on the Ionian island of Zakynthos in the 16th and 17th centuries. The holy hierarch was the son of pious and wealthy parents. In his youth he entered the ancient monastery of the Strophada Islands, where he donned the monastic habit.
A procession of St. Dionysius’ Holy Relics through the island’s capital to a Cathedral dedicated to the saint took place on Monday, followed by a Doxology service, a Great Vespers and an all-night vigil.
An archieratical Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Tuesday, officiated by the Metropolitan of Zakynthos, His Eminence Dionysius, followed by a litany procession through the city’s center.
