Church of Greece Holy Synod convenes in light of latest coronavirus restrictions

The Holy Synod of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece on Wednesday opened a three-day session, with the main topic on the agenda being a new joint ministerial decision issued by the Greek government to prevent exposure to the coronavirus.

Stricter public assembly measures have been restored in areas where the pandemic resurfaced with worrying intensity, such as a maximum number of people in places of worship and, in some cases, the holding of services and sacraments with no worshippers present.

One current member of the 164th permanent Holy Synod, the Metropolitan of Nea Ionia, Philadelphia and Halkidona, His Eminence Gabriel, spoke to the online radio station Pemptousia.gr, where he stressed that the Church of Greece now has the experience to better manage the latest restrictions.
