The Church today also venerates the memory of Joseph the hymnographer.
St. Joseph was born in Sicily in the ninth century. He endured slavery earlier in his life after being abducted by Moslem pirates operating from Crete. After returning to Constantinople, he lived and worked with pious zeal for the rest of his life, becoming renowned as a hymnographer.
