The settlement of Byzantium, on the Bosporus, was chosen by Roman Emperor Constantine the Great in 330 to become the empire’s new capital, a “New Rome”, a Christian metropolis dedicated to the Panaghia, the Virgin Mary.
The city later took his name, venerable and fabled Constantinople.
