The government of the Republic of Cyprus on Wednesday evening announced that personal worship will be allowed in places of worship as of Monday, with up to 10 people at a time allowed into a church, chapel and temples of other faiths.
The internationally recognized Cyprus government controls roughly two-thirds of the east Mediterranean island, and is a member of the European Union and the Eurozone, however, the remaining portion of the island is illegally occupied by the Turkish military, which has set up a pseudo-state in the occupied areas.
The presence of worshipers at services and Divine Liturgies will be allowed as of June 1.
Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades made the announcement during a nationally televised address, briefing citizens on the gradual lifting of coronavirus-related restrictions against non-essential movement and public assemblies.
The Cypriot president also thanked the Archbishop of Cyprus, His Beatitude Chrysostomos, for his and the Church’s stance amid the pandemic.
