CYRIL AND METHODIUS RESEARCH CENTER OPENS AT BULGARIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

On Tuesday, September 29, the “Kirilometodikon” Cyril and Methodius Research Center was opened at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia.

The newly-constructed premises were presented by the Center’s deputy director, Dr. Slavia Burlieva, and the Center’s educational coordinator, Dr. Elka Zlateva, who spoke about the plans for the Center, reports the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

Researchers at the Center will provide specialized information about the work of the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius, the Enlighteners of the Slavs, for educational purposes, tailored to the interests and needs of all levels from high school through doctoral studies.

The Center will unite available knowledge about the work of Sts. Cyril and Methodius in philological, historical, and cultural terms, Dr. Burlieva explained.

The feast of Sts. Cyril and Methodius, May 24, is celebrated in Bulgaria as the Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slavic Writing. The holy brothers are credited with creating the Glagolitic alphabet, which preceded the Cyrillic alphabet that is named for St. Cyril and still used throughout Slavic lands.
