Delegation of Serbian Orthodox Church’s Episcopal Council of Montenegro in US; focus on contentious law recently passed by Montenegro

A delegation of the Episcopal Council of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro arrived in the United States this week in order to hold meetings with US officials, with the focus being on the dire situation that has emerged in the small Adriatic country for religious institutions – especially the Orthodox Church – after the passage of a controversial law last month.

The Orthodox Church in Montenegro is bitterly opposed to the new law, which was drafted and ratified by the current government. The law maintains that religious institutions must present proof of ownership and titles of properties and relics that they have held prior to WWI, otherwise the state can confiscate the latter.

Church hierarchs and the faithful have repeatedly charged that the law is mainly aimed at harming and insulting the Serbian Orthodox Church.
