The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, His All Holiness Bartholomew I, on Tuesday morning officiated at a con-celebratory service at the Church of St. Kyriake, in the downtown Kumkapı district of the Bosporus metropolis.
Known in Greek as the Kontoskaliou district, it was one of the best known ethnic Greek communities in past decades.

The Cathedral was built in the late 19th century to a design of Pericles Photiades, the architect who designed the Theological School of Halki.

The Ecumenical Patriarch’s celebration of the service commemorated the memory of Kyriake the Great Martyr.

St. Kyriake was the daughter of Christian parents. She was given her name because she was born on Sunday, the day of the Lord, which in Greek is Kyriake. She contested in Nicomedia during the reign of Diocletian, in the year 300.
