The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, sharply criticized a visit by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the breakaway and Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus on Sunday, where the Islamist leader called for a “two-state” solution. The EU’s top diplomat reiterated the need for a settlement of the Cyprus issue on the basis United Nations resolutions.
In a written statement, Borrell said Erdogan’s provocation to visit Varosha, a beach resort abandoned after Turkey’s invasion in 1974, “… will cause greater distrust and tension in the region and should be urgently reversed.”
