The Church today venerates the memory of Catherine, the Great Martyr of Alexandria.

St. Catherine was an exceedingly beautiful maiden, most chaste, and illustrious in wealth, lineage and learning.

By her steadfast understanding, she utterly vanquished the passionate and unbridled soul of Maxi-minus, the tyrant of Alexandria; and by her eloquence, she silenced the so-called philosophers who gathered to dispute with her.

She achieved the crown of martyrdom in the year 305.

St. Catherine’s holy relics were divinely translated to the holy mountain of Sinai, where they were discovered many years later. The renowned monastery of St. Catherine was originally dedicated to the Holy Transfiguration of the Lord and the Burning Bush, and subsequently dedicated to St. Catherine.

A feature is posted today on the pages of the Orthodoxia News Agency on the Sacred Monastery of the God-Trodden Mount Sinai, an UNESCO World Heritage site.
