Feast day of John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople; Divine Liturgy at Patriarchal Cathedral of St. George

The Church today venerates the memory of John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople.

This greatest and most beloved of all Christian orators was born to pious parents in Antioch the Great in the fourth century.

St. John was surnamed Chrysostom, which means “Golden-mouth” in Greek, due to his eloquence.

He made exhaustive commentaries on the divine Scriptures and was the author of more works than any other Church Father, leaving us complete commentaries on the Book of Genesis, the Gospels of Sts. Matthew and John, the Acts, and all the Epistles of St. Paul.

Besides his feast day today and on January 27, he is celebrated as one of the Three Hierarchs on January 30, together with St. Basil the Great and St. Gregory the Theologian.

The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, His All Holiness Bartholomew I, officiated at a Divine Liturgy at the Patriarchal Cathedral of St. George in the Patriarchate’s Phanar district seat on Friday, on the occasion of feast day.

According to ecclesiastical tradition, His All Holiness was seated at the side-throne, known as parathronion, while the holy icon of St. John Chrysostomos was placed on the patriarchal throne, and the saint’s holy relics placed in front of the throne for veneration by the faithful.
