Feast day of St. Philothei of Athens – (VIDEO)
The Church today venerates the memory of Philothei, the Righteous Martyr of Athens.
St. Philothei was born in Athens in 1522 to an illustrious family. After becoming a widow at a very young age, she took up the monastic life and established a convent, where he became a true mother to her disciples.
Many women enslaved and abused by the Muslim Ottomans sought refuge at the convent.
This attracted the ire of the Turks, and led to a local overlord ordering that she be cruelly beaten. After a few days she reposed.
The year of her passing was in 1589.
A feature is posted today on the pages of the Orthodoxia News Agency on the life, works and martyrdom of this 16th century saint.
