The cathedral is designed in a neo-Byzantine style and was built in memory of those who fell for the liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman rule in the late 19th century.

Construction of the cathedral began on August 1904 and lasted until 1912. The Alexander Nevski cathedral was consecrated in 1924.

The Bulgarian Patriarchate’s Bishop of Melnik, His Grace Gerasim, who is the first secretary of the Bulgarian Church’s holy synod, officiated at a con-celebratory Divine Liturgy.
