Today marks the 45th anniversary of the return of Cyprus President and Archbishop Makarios to the island republic, months after a Turkish invasion expanded to cover one-third of the island, which remains occupied to this day.
The Greek Cypriot statesman, a symbol of democracy, justice and unwavering resolve for a united Cyprus, returned on Nov. 29, 1974 and was greeted by a crowd of 250,000 Cypriots
