The monastery of Varnakova, in the south-central Greece prefecture of Fokida, sustained major damages from a fire that erupted at the nunnery on Sunday evening. Unfortunately, the well-known icon of the Panaghia Varnakova was destroyed in the blaze — three years after narrowly being saved from another fire at the site.
Firefighters were able to keep the blaze confined, preventing it from spilling into the adjacent forestland. All of the nuns at the convent were also evacuated.
A feature is posted today on the pages of the Orthodoxia news agency on the holy icon of the Panaghia Varnakova.
