Four Church of Greece Metropolitans call for Pan-Orthodox synod on issue of Ukrainian Church autocephaly
Four Metropolitans of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece this week called for the convening of a Pan-Orthodox synod to broach the issue of the granting of the Tomos of autocephaly for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. A lengthy letter requesting such a synod was signed by the Metropolitan of Dri-inoupolis, Pogonianis & Konitsas, the Metropolitan of Piraeus, the Metropolitan of Kythira and Antikythira and the Metropolitan of Aetolia & Akarnania, their Eminences Andreas, Seraphim, Seraphim and Cosmas, respectively.
The letter is addressed to the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, His All Holiness Bartholomew I, and to the Primates of the world’s autocephalous Orthodox Churches.
The four Metropolitans detail the reasons they have requested a pan-Orthodox Synod, or as they refer, to an Ecumenical Holy Synod, while using very strong language in reference to the Patriarchate-recognized Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which they called a “bone of contention” and an entity that unnerves Christ’s followers in the Holy Orthodox Churches.
