Fr. Georgios Metallinos reposes at the age of 79
Well-known academic and theologian Fr. Georgios Metallinos reposed in the Lord on Thursday.
Fr. Metallinos, a theology professor at the University of Athens since 1984, specialized in the teaching of lessons “History of Spiritual Life in the post-Byzantine Period” and “History and Theology of Worship”, as well as in Byzantine studies, as a whole.
He served as dean of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens’ faculty of theology from 2004 until his retirement in 2007, whereupon Fr. Georgios was professor emeritus.
Fr. Georgios was born on the Ionian island of Corfu in 1940. He completed simultaneous studies in theology and philology at the University of Athens. Following completion of mandatory military service, he was first appointed as a research assistant at the University’s department of Patristic studies, followed by post-graduate studies in Bonn and Cologne, whereby he resided in West Germany until 1975.
Fr. Georgios was ordained in the Orthodox Church while in West Germany in 1971. He received a PhD in theology from his alma mater and a PhD in philosophy and history from the University of Cologne.
Fr. Georgios, a proto-Presbyter in the Greek Orthodox Church, exercised his pastoral activity at the St. Antypas Church, located within the Athens School of Dentistry.
In 2015 he was honored with the Macedonian Award for his life’s work.
