Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Costas Vlassis referred to the strategic role placed by Greece in safeguarding religious freedoms and in protecting religious minorities, speaking during the annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington D.C.

Vlassis, who holds the expatriate Greeks portfolio, met during the event with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, where he reiterated that international pressure should continue towards ensuring respect for the rights of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

The Greek minister said he repeated Athens’ standing support for the Ecumenical Patriarchate and for pressure to continue so that Turkish authorities allow the Halki school to reopen.
