Greek President speaks with EU state, Greek church leaders

President Katerina Sakellaropoulou spoke separately on Wednesday with the presidents of Malta George Vella and of Ireland Michael Higgins to thank them for their letters of solidarity over the coronavirus pandemic.
Both Sakellaropoulou and Vella emphasized the need for a careful and gradual lifting of related restrictive measures, while the presidents of Malta and Ireland also emphasized the need for cooperation, solidarity and equal sharing of responsibilities among European partners.

In addition, Higgins expressed his solidarity to Greece on the handling of the migration crisis and stressed the need for a common European response to both this issue and to climate change.

Also on Wednesday, the Greek President spoke separately with Archbishop Hieronymos of Athens and All Greece and with Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana, Durres and All Albania, and thanked them for the support they provide to the faithful during the difficult times of the coronavirus pandemic.

Sakellaropoulou particularly noted the inspiring and guiding role of the church, and wished both church leaders happy Easter.

The archbishops called for hope and faith, and expressed the certainty that the rallying of human solidarity will overcome the pandemic and its repercussions.
