His Holiness Irinej, Serbian Patriarch opened a monumental exhibition “The Eight Centuries of Art under the auspices of the Serbian Orthodox Church”
Within the central celebration of the jubilee of the eight centuries of the autocephaly of the Serbian Orthodox Church, His Holiness Irinej, Serbian Patriarch opened a monumental exhibition “The Eight Centuries of Art under the auspices of the Serbian Orthodox Church” in the Museum of the Serbian Orthodox Church on 9 October 2019.
The exhibition is organized with the blessing of His Holiness Irinej, Serbian Patriarch, and members of the Holy Synod of Bishops with support of the Ministry of Culture and Information, Ministry of Justice, the Office for Cooperation with Churches and Religious Communities, Secretariate for Culture of the City of Belgrade and other institutions. The exhibition is accompanied by the 157-page with a more than hundred illustrations in color by the author Dr. Miljana Matic, curator of the Museum of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
The exhibition was opened in the presence of members of the Holy Synod of Bishops, Crown Prince Alexander and Princess Katherine Karadjordjevic, representatives of the ministries of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, representatives of the Serbian Armed Forces, associates and friends of the Museum, as well as of a numerous audience.
Observing the testament of Saint Sava, a large corpus of Serbian ecclesiastical art has been created – since the time of the noble lineage of Nemanjics, via Prince Lazar and his successors, Despot Brankovic and the provincial rulers of the Serbian lands Balsics, Kotromanics, Crnojevics …
The Museum of the Serbian Orthodox Church, specially redecorated for the occasion, exhibited over six hundred artefacts that have been created under the auspices of the Serbian Orthodox Church – starting with the Pec Patriarchate and Decani Monastery throughout the territory inhabited by Serbs, until the monastery of Krka, from XIII to XX century.Treasures of churches and monasteries where liturgical items and books were created by orders of medieval Serbian rulers and members of their families, patriarchs and bishops, abbots and monks, as well as by believing people themselves, have been brought to attention of the museum visitors.
